Calvary Hill as a Vineyard: Instead of a barren, rocky hill, the hill where the crosses stand was meticulously sculpted into the shape of a vineyard . The furrows and notches in the linoleum recreate the lines of vines, tendrils, and terraces. This artistic choice carries a profound biblical symbolism, linking the sacrifice on the cross to the metaphor of Christ as the "True Vine".
• The Three Crosses: At the top of this vineyard-hill stand the three traditional crosses , silhouetted against the sky, reinforcing the historical narrative of Golgotha.
• The Sky of Heavy Clouds: The background is dominated by a dramatic sky, filled with dense and expressive clouds . Cuts in the linoleum create dynamic textures and lines of force in the sky, evoking the darkness and storm that, according to accounts, covered the earth during the crucifixion.
• Jerusalem and the City's Edge: Beside the hill, the city of Jerusalem is depicted with its walls, towers, and unique architecture. The composition makes it clear that Calvary is located outside the city gates , respecting the historical and theological accuracy that the sacrifice occurred beyond the walls of Jerusalem.
The graphic and binary contrast of black ink on paper enhances the rustic and handcrafted aspect of the linocut. The sculpted texture of the vine contrasts with the fluidity of the clouds and the straight lines of Jerusalem's architecture, creating a piece that is simultaneously a historical narrative and a powerful spiritual allegory.
