Mary and the Angel

This 8x10 inch (20x25 cm) cold wax and oil painting on a wooden panel offers a deeply textured, atmospheric interpretation of the Annunciation. The unique blending of beeswax with oil paint lends the piece a matte, translucent quality, with visible layers built up and carved into using palette knives.

Appearing before Mary is the Angel Gabriel, whose presence is defined by ethereal, luminous layers of zinc white, and bright gold, and iridescence built up in thick, translucent planes. Gabriel's form appears almost semi-abstract, emerging gracefully from a background of textured, scraped wax.
